The historic center of Rennes
The Center district also called Vieux Rennes has the "historic center of Rennes". There are in particular half-timbered houses and the old doors of Mordel. These are the few vestiges of the ramparts of Rennes, they are inscribed in the historical monument since 1926. There is also the Parliament of Brittany dating from the seventeenth century and inscribed in historical monuments since 1883. During the French Revolution its place hosted the guillotine. All these monuments bear witness to the history of Rennes. On the night of December 23, 1720, the city burns. For six days, the fire will ravage the city center: nearly 10 ha are affected and 945 buildings are destroyed. The reconstruction of the city is an opportunity to implement the ideas of urban planners of the time; the views must be clear and the streets wider. Until 1841, the southern district is a vast swamp because of frequent floods of the Vilaine, but thanks to the canalization of this one, which ended in 1861, the city could really develop South. The 1970s saw the destruction of the barracks of Colombier to build instead the vast set of houses and shops that is the Colombier (tower of the spur, mall Colombia, the slab ...).

The Parliament of Brittany
Major work of architecture of the seventeenth century, the Parliament of Brittany is today one of the few places in France where justice and sightseeing coexist. A monument that almost disappeared after a tragic fire in 1994. Beautifully restored, it is open to visitors all year round.
